We got him...

It happened a few weeks ago but strangely, the victory was bittersweet. I took pictures but it would be profane to post them.

Well met brave thirteen lined ground squirrel!

Nothing yet...

HofH continues to monitor the situation and pour cup after cup of sand into the tunnel. The 13-lined ground squirrel continues to elude capture and dig cup after cup of sand out of the tunnel.

Next up - a rat trap!

Never one to give up, HofH has now employed a rat trap. No longer scary, I find the rat trap hilarious.

Sightings continue - just this morning I spied the little bugger; but he continues to elude HofH's traps.

Mix it up!

I returned from The Cabin to see these new traps set outside the garage; thus far yielding no results. Stay tuned for a rat trap (the mere thought of which makes me shiver).

Enticement

Cracked corn and sliced roast beef. No returns on this investment yet.

The Evidence

We don't see much of him anymore but here's a picture of the hole the 13 lined ground squirrel has dug between the garage and the driveway. You can see where he pushes out the sand HofH pours into the hole.

It's time...

HofH has been fervently battling a 13 lined ground squirrel for months. This provides me no end of amusement and I decided, on this Saturday afternoon, to record it for posterity.

Background: The gopher (as I like to call them) lives somewhere under the garage or maybe the apron in front of the garage. The problem is that his egress is a tunnel between the garage and the apron. For some reason, this bugs the everliving shit out of HofH.

History: HofH has poured poison, Brillo pads, wads of steel wool and sand down the hole. The gopher just plows through it and goes on his merry way.

Lately: An elaborate trap sits out on the apron. It's baited with savory cracked corn (borrowed from the chickens). The trap is stashed in the garage during the day and at night. I'm not sure why during the day but at night is because HofH doesn't want to attract a raccoon.

Anecdote: I was working from home one day and participating in a conference call out on the porch. The 13 lined ground squirrel came out of his tunnel, approached stage left, walked behind me and around to the right. Since this scared the crap out of me, I cannot tell you where he went next. I jumped 3.5 feet and scampered into the house.

On the spot news: The trap awaits. HofH put the cracked corn into a tidy little container. I'm not sure why. Perhaps he thinks he has to market it. Surely, weeks of corn tossed wily nily into the trap didn't' yield anything - so maybe this tidy packaging will help.
